Possible to work 6 mo on/ 6 mo off??

Published

I was just wondering if anyone had come across that - a hospital which allows you to work 6 mo, then take 6 off or anything similar? Or like a tag team situation, where you work 6, then your partner works the other (roughly). I do know that at Beaumont in MI they have 24 hrs in one day per week shifts. The CRNA that I heard of makes 180/yr - which leads to another question - how is he being compensated more than average and he is working about half of a normal weekly load. I can't ask myself since this is someone my teacher knows but I know that kind of shift is fairly common. I would happily work two 24 hr days a week if I could have 6 mos off a year. Is there a solution?

Maybe after you get experience. You might be able to do some contract work. But I'm not 100% sure.

we have a group of CRNA's that work 2 weeks on and 1 week off (rotating). However do not think we would ever consider 6 mo on and 6 mo off. Especially since the group that does the 2 week/ 1 week schedule are always available and very flexible. They cover each other so that nobody else has to. On the money question its simple supply and demand. That CRNA may work less but may take difficult cases, call, do heads/hearts, etc. A great CRNA with several years experience and the ability to handle complex cases commands a nice salary.

I looked up different CRNA job sites, and came across some very interesting info. It seems there is a huge need for lucum tenens (substitute) CRNAs and Doctors in almost every state. These are temporary jobs that usually announce the time period they need you for. I am sure they pay a little extra since they probably have no benefits, but they cover insurance etc. But this is exactly what I was looking for since it will allow me to be off work for extended periods and live abroad. Though I am sure I will need to work at a good facility for at least two years first. But just knowing that exists out there is great!
