Here's a PubMed article to get you started:

Sounds like an embolism to me. jmho.
I've never done this myself but I posted your question on a venous-access specialty site and will get back to you.
Oh,boy. The responses I got to this article on another forum were 110% against it.
This was an in vitro study with some (well,OK, more than a few) problems with it. The authors got flamed pretty harshly from some of the heavies in the vasc-access field. There were concerns over the clot being shot into the vein, the catheter being stressd to the point of maybe breaking, this not being approved by syringe or catheter manufacturers, etc, etc.
To be honest,it sounds like an interesting method. However, before I started using it I would want many questions answered. It may some day turn out to be an accepted method of catheter clearance. The authors of the article,IMHO,may be on to something but were very premature and incomplete in their study and the journal's editorial staff heard about it from plenty of people. I think some of them over-reacted,but to be honest some of their concerns are valid.
So,bottom line, maybe some day it'll be approved, accepted and catch on. Til then,it's just a potentially good idea that needs moore investigating.

Ace
