Hi

I have a math problem that I am pulling my hair out over and I am sure it is something simple I am missing.

This is it: Amoxil 500 mg po q6 h is ordered for a child weighing 50 kg. The recommended high dosage of amoxil is 80 - 100 mg/kg/24 h q12.

A. what is the single dose range for this child?

B. Is the ordered dose safe to administer? Prove your response.

I keep getting 10 for my answer and it is suppose to be 312.5 to 625. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.:banghead:

Thanks

You're getting 10 what as your answer?

Also, are you certain you've copied the question correctly? I'm confused as to why it would say "80 - 100 mg/kg/24 h q12" - is it over 24 hours or every 12 hours? It can't be both.

I copied it directly from the book. I am getting 10mg per dose. I have double checked and that is how it is stated. Should I start thinking the book may have a misprint. I am more than capable of doing basic calculations and this one tripped me up bad.

I think that The recommended high dose is too high. According to my drug book, the max amoxil dose for child is rare ( only when acute otitis media due to highly resistant strains of S. Pneumoniae: 80-90kg/mg/day q 12hr). The typical dose is between 25-50mg/kg/day q12hr.

25mg/kg/24hr x 50kg = 1250mg/24hr

Now divide both of them by 2 since we need every 12 hr not 24 hr.

= 625 mg/ 12 hr

i think there is more than one transcription error in your problem....you have two differing dosage intervals, as highlighted....and as the other poster mentioned the numbers appear out of range.....using your numbers, i get a range of 1000-1250......i have never seen such doses!
