Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

Hope all is well. This is my first post but I've read several in the last few days. Wow........what a great board with so much information.

Here's my story:

I've been a Human Resources Manager in CA for nearly 19 years and I'm really starting to think of Nursing as my second career. I've always wanted to be a Nurse but......here it goes.......I don't think I can handle the blood.

I know the blood thing may sound weird because I want to be a nurse but it's true and one of the issues that has held me back all these years.

I'm also worried I may be coming in a little too late since I'll be 37 yrs old this year. I have a BA degree and not sure how long it will take to become an RN.

It's not about the money since I have a very good salary, comparable to a nurse; It's about wanting a change and making a difference in someones life (as a Nurse can).

What are your thoughts? Good or bad....... I want to hear it.

I look forward to your comments.

I am way older than you and going back. Here is what inspired me. My aunt is 89 years old and still gets around. Now, if I happen to live that long-I have about 50% more of my life to live. Another thing is trying to get a job in business after 40 is very difficult. I had excellent credentials (look at least 10 years younger) and still had difficulty. I, somehow, do not see that in nursing. No one cares how old I am or what I look like as long as I do my job. At least that is my mode of thinking. When I applied to the nursing school, they said my background in business and marketing would be excellent.

Good luck,

Holly

Holly, thanks for the nice response.

Anyone on my fear of blood issue? Can it be overcome?

Sonya

YES.

I am a hemodialysis nurse and scared to death of needles. LOL

I can't watch another nurse put in needles, I don't watch any "medical" shows, and I can't watch a patient put in their needles either.

But give me a needle and I can go to town. LOL:lol2:

Holly, thanks for the nice response.

Yes, it can be overcome.

I'm now 38 and in LPN school, so don't let your age be a hinderance to you. I was a medic in the Army, then a civilian EMT, so blood-n-guts were not the problem for me; poop and vomit were. However, one rotation thru LTC fixed that issue. ;)

Keep you eyes on the prize and you can overcome any obstacle.

Wow! What awesome and hopeful replies. I honestly didn't think it was possible.

My fears are similar to those of ~ NephroBSN, but I didn't want to list them all for fear everyone might think I'm crazy for considering this.

THANKS SO MUCH! WHAT A RELIEF.

I think I might also consider Hypnosis, what can it hurt.

:) Sonya
