Please Clarify.

I have heard rumors that most hospitals are not hiring ADN new grads anymore and they are being laid off. I am about to graduate from the ADN program and am freaking out if I am going to get a job. I want to know whats going on so please help clarify.

As with anything...depends on where you live.

Ask the hospitals where you live or where you hope to work. In my hometown, hospitals don't have a choice - they take who they can get and that's usually ADN grads because there is a community college with a nursing program in town. In bigger areas, hospitals have more of a chance to be picky and I could see competitive hospitals preferring BSN grads, but again, that's not set in stone. One of the universities in part of my state had a bad reputation for their nursing program for a long time and the hospitals often preferred ADN grads.

I haven't heard of ADNs being laid off. Like pitaya said above, some of the bigger city hospitals are only hiring new grads that have BSNs. Those same hospitals will hire ADNs who have several years of experience.

Yes, it depends on where you live. I would expect many hospitals would allow their ADNs to remain employed if they are currently enrolled in an ADN-BSN program. I would put calls in to the major hospitals in your region and just ask their HR department what they are doing regarding this issue. Then plan on researching ADN-BSN programs so you can continue your education. Good luck!
