Phlebotomy class?

Nursing Students Student Assist

Should I take the 2 extra classes required to get my phlebotomy certification? There really arent many jobs for phlebotomist around the area, but I have been told getting certified in phlebotomy will help me once I get to nursing school...I plan on applying to the nursing program itself in 2008. I have a lot of pre-reqs to go thru. I cant get into any of the CNA programs that I hoped for so I am going to try finding just a regular part-time job once I find out what my schedule will be for this fall. Just wanted to know what you all think...thanks.

I am currently taking Phlebotomy for my own benefit. I was done with my pre-reqs, thought I had a year or so wait to get into the nursing program. Since most people have a difficult time finding a good vein on me. I figured it was one more thing to help me. I am more at ease with finding the veins, there was alot of medical terminology and anatomy review. For me it is helpful. In our area there is a need for phlebotomist because of the state law that took effect, July 1. I am starting the nursing program in August, a year ahead of schedule, I think it will help me in the clinical setting when we get to that point.

If you have the time and resources you should do it. I am all about extra's any extra body of knowledge will only further you. Plus extra certifications look goon on your resume :)

Specializes in Level III cardiac/telemetry.

I got my phlebotomy certification last year and although I haven't worked with it since then I know it will help me down the road. All the nurses I talk to say they didn't get much practice at it in school and basically had to improve once they were on the job. Although now most hospitals have a phlebotomy department and IV team so nurses seldom do either one of that.
