I have been a nurse for 10 years, the first 9 in emergency departments. I changed to an inpatient pediatric floor within the past year for a chance of pace. The unit is fairly new and the staff is unexperienced and uncomfortable with pediatric code situations. I have assumed the responsibility to help educate and competency the department. This includes designing competencies and now to stage mock code scenarios monthly. I have been using the Pediatric Mock Code Toolbox that Loyola published to obtain some scenarios and evaluation tools but I am looking for additional examples to rotate in. Looking for any help on finding mock code scenarios for pediatric cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, anaphylaxis, seizure, hypovolemia. Thank you.

I worked as a tech in Peds for about 6 years. We had monthly mock codes. My nurse educators goal was to catch anyone off guard. She would hit the call bell in a room and the first person in the room had to initiate the code and the staff would follow suit. This prepared me for almost anything. I don't have any recommendations but I want to assure you that whatever you chose to do.. Someone will benefit from it. So awesome of you!!

I WISH we did this. I would like to add that in addition to mock codes...THOROUGHLY going over each role would be beneficial. I noticed most nurses are afraid to admit they don't know how to connect and operate a defibrillator, chart, push meds...etc.

In those 9 years in the ED did you run any pediatric codes? When I teach PALS the scenarios I use are all ones that I have actually done.
