I have to take the PBDS exam for L&D/OB. Can anyone help with what they think will be on the exam? Has anyone taken it? Thanks

Never heard of it - what facility is doing this? And what are they expecting to test a new grad on? Hasn't the NCLEX traumatized new grads enough? :lol2:

When I got hired at my last job, we all had to do PBDS (I worked cardiac), but it had nothing to do with OB. It was a customer service/competency type thing-I think. It was over 9 years ago, so I barely remember it. It stood for Performance Based Development System.

Yes traumatized enough. Its a Centura Health and I know that HCA does it too. Its various videos, you have 8 min to watch them- then write down a medical diagnosis (am I a MD?)... what would I do (detailed) and my reason for doing so. Also a section on priority. And a section on IV pictures like; infiltration, phlebitis ect and what I would do to correct. It was just an annoying day. If I do not pass by their standards I guess I need to do it again. Im now drinking a glass of wine.

Traumatized isn't strong enough. Can you say "Nervous Breakdown" As a new nurse I was required to take this stupid exam. Because I did not write the words PASS and RACE on the fire question (I explained every step required) They failed me. Now I have to retake the test specific for the floor that I've been assigned to which is GYN (not OB). I asked what happens if I don't pass this time and was politely told that I could be fired!!!!!!

Great, I'm good enough to work extra 12 hour shifts, my supervisor gives me a raving review, my patients love me, but if I don't put the wording they want on this test they are going to FIRE me!!!

It's seems that they are more concerned with how well you test, not what kind of patient care you are giving!!!!!

When I did the PBDS at Swedish they told me that 70% of nurses don't pass... I just remember winging it and writing a lot of "notify MD"! Luckily I passed, but don't sweat it if you don't.

Huh, I was just hired by Centura Health (in L&D) and didn't have to take it.

I just got hired on by Swedish and I have to take this test. Is it specific to your unit? How do you study for the exam? God trying to pass the nclex and then find a job was enough for me. Now I have nerves on what the heck I have to do next. Do any of you work at swedish?

nope its from memorial hospital in colorado. its a self assessment test of what you learned in school.

The test was traumatizing. I could barely think after doing orientation all day. I barely passed by the skin of my teeth. It's so stupid on why these people make us take a test like that.

My understanding is that they want their nurses to take it, not to be punitive, but to focus their training where the nurses need it most.

Although I know that certain hospitals require travel nurses to take it and the contract is cancelled if they don't pass. But for staff nurses, most hospitals use it for training purposes only.

I just took the PBDS assessment for TMCA...And YES it was pretty intense...However, after asking SEVERAL questions about what they were looking for I found that the test...in all reality is more of an assessment to see where you are in your critical thinking skills and assessments. They will base the rest of your orientation and classes they offer on the test and what areas you need help or more training in. I think it is Great...who wouldnt want to improve their nursing skills, Specifically in the area that they will be working in...It is a Win! Win! situation as far as I am concerned...I get the education I want/need to be a safe and great nurse and the company/hospital gets the satisfaction of knowing they will have a well trained nurse on their floor....
