the pbds consists of video segments showing scenarios such as a pt having an MI, CVA, PE, dig toxicity, thrombocytopenia, ilieus, DKA, ARF...you have 5 mins to give detailed answers about how to treat. answers should include your diagnosis (though nurses aren't allowed to diagnose), check vitals, give o2, stay with pt, call a code, call md, anticipate that specific labs will be ordered, assure pt's IV access, use protocols to order stat EKG, CT's, give ASA, etc. be sure to include things like 'stop heparin drip' if u think it's thrombocyto. and 'hold dig' if it's toxicity. ALWAYS include educate pt and family! this test requires detail and your answers are, as i understand it, compared with the 'stock' answers of other RN's. If your assessments, actions, interventions etc are thorough and enough answers match what others would do, you pass. it's a graded scale of good, better, excellent type score. check out this page for possible scenario's: http://www.clinicalone.com/c1/careercenter_clienttesting.asp

Has anyone taken this PBDS and the time ran out??This happened to me what does that indictate...that you do not pass...anyone out there have a suggestive answer? Please let me know..Thanks a lot

I've taken the PBDS (OB test) multiple times as a traveler. It was originally designed as a tool for hospitals to identify the teaching needs for new hires. Some hospitals now use it as a "pass/fail" evaluation for travel nurses. Imagine being 2000 miles from your home and being told you don't have a contract because you "failed" this test. I will only accept contracts requiring this test if I am in my home state.

For permanent hires it should be used to design your orientation to cover areas needed.

The scoring on it is calculated according to how much experience you have. In other words, a new grad would not be expected to have as detailed an answer as someone with 15 years experience.

This, of course, is in an ideal setting. Hospitals can decide on their own how to use the results.

I know its been some time since you posted this, but can you remember the types of scenarios they gave you?

I know that I am not the poster, but a few answers, if that poster is not available.

Unfortunately, they change them and they often are different for various depts. This is to prevent people from cheating. For a while, many agencies were giving "study guides" and there were some legal fallout as they "too closely" mimicked the actual scenarios.

As a lot of it is to test critical thinking in real time nursing situations, studying scenarios really doesn't help that much. The general manner of scenarios are based on common issues that occur to nurses and that nurses with certain level of knowledge should know the immediate ways to cope with such issues/emergencies.

I frequently ran out of time to write all my answers that I wanted, but always passed.

There is no defined number of scenarios to get right to pass or fail. And The test varies from site to site, with some having "customer service" questions/prioterization components thus hard to predict what one will get.
