Paying for school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone, I'm new to allnurses and I have a question for everyone. All suggestions are welcome and will be appreciated. I'm trying figure out how to pay for nursing school. I've applied for a program that starts in the fall and I haven't found out if I've been admitted yet. However. I'm trying to make sure that prepared financially so that if I am accepted, I will be able to pay my expenses.

Almost everyone that I've spoken with (including nursing students, professors, and nursing advisors) has told me that, although it's not impossible to work full time during nursing school, it is very very hard and most people wind up failing out of the program if they try to work full time.

Ok, so my problem is this...since this is my second undergraduate degree I don't qualify for any federal financial aid. The school I'm applying to for my associates (doing the bridge program to bsn after with a uni) only works with one private lender and the max amount possible to get from them is not enough to cover expenses. I'm not worried about tuition because it's not very expensive at this school but I am a single parent and I have no family to live with and I will need to pay rent, utilities provide for my childs needs. I don't want to jeopardize my education and try to work full time but Im having trouble finding ways to pay for school.

I'm hoping to atleast with part time and probably try to work full time and see how it goes. My supervisor is aware of my situation and I've been a good employee for 4 years so she is very understanding and if suddenly need to drop some hours she has told me that will be no problem.

Ive applied for countless scholarships and I'm still applying but I'm worried I won't get any. I don't know what else to do so if anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

to summarize, I've applied for:

-scholarships and fasfa federal loans

-private educational loans seem to be an option but won't cover much

-personal loans are not an option because I will be cutting my income in half

-I'm planing to apply for government aide if all else fails (to be clear, I'm not ashamed to use government aide such as food stamps and eventual assistance, I'm just saving it for if nothing else works out)

thank you to anyone who took the time to read this and I hope you all have a great week!

I am working on an associate's degree at a community college and did my first couple of semesters part-time, with one evening class and one online class. Plenty of time to work to pay the bills. There's lots of other family folks doing the same too. Sure we'd all like to finish as soon as possible, but we all need to pay for our lives too, so you just need to do it at the pace you can afford.

I don't know what the job situation is where you are, but around here it seems like almost everyone is hiring nurses with associate's degrees and you can work on your bachelors online if you want to continue on.

Hi Rionoir, I hope your semester is going well. That's pretty much what I've been doing these last 3 semesters to get pre-requisites done but what I'm finding is that the programs I'm finding in my state don't offer the option to do the nursing programs part time. When accepted, we enter with our class and we graduate with our class. Atleast for the schools I've found, I'm not finding any flexibility on that. im planning to get my associTes and then start working and hopefully my hospital will pay for tuition for the online bridge program from RN to BSN. I just have to figure out how to get through 2 years. I may wind up moving an hour away because rent where I live is kind of expensive and it's hard to find anything I could afford working part time. Good luck in your schooling and I hope you have a great night!

@scienceismyhobby88 Hey there! First of all Congratulation for making your mind that you wish to be a nurse! Whooohooo! No really?! Are you sure:)!!! Anyways I had something similar type of scenario when I decided to be a nurse. Back then I was a single parent and was working as a waitress to support myself and my lovely son. Things were so screwed up I don't even wish to remember that. Anyways make real long story short, I took two jobs, moved in to my mom's basement, and started taking part time classes. I had the same problem with financial aid and loans. So I decided to look up scholarships for moms and whatever that would pay for anything. After applying close to may be over 200 scholarships I did get one scholarships. Then after one year of college, I found a job in a mental hospital as Human service assistant. Thank GOD! Then after 2 years being a full time long term employee, My employer gave me full tuition fees for Nursing degree If I signed a contract and stayed with them for next 5 years. So I would say GET READY to WORK HARD. Each day apply at least one scholarships, get a job if possible in healthcare field. There are some good scholarships listed here, Nurse scholarships - State nurse scholarships | Nursing scholarships, male nursing grants,Nursing Scholarships, Nursing grants,Male Nursing Scholarships

Hope it Helps. BEST OF LUCK!
