Paramedic to Nursing??

Published

Hello all! I have a question and hopefully I can gain some insight through your responses.

I was wondering if being a certified paramedic (w/ an associates in science EMS degree) would make it easier to apply to a nursing program with the hopes of being a trauma/ER nurse? By "easier" I'm referring to the experience gained as a paramedic; would you say a nurse w/ paramedic experience is a great asset to any ER/trauma center?

hope to hear from someone soon

Destiny - while I think it would a little easier to go from paramedic to RN, they are two different sciences. You might want to do a search as there are several long threads on this subject. Good luck.

Depending on your location, being a medic may or may not be of benefit when applying to nursing school. Personally, I think having your medic does make it easier. Because medic school tends to touch on the highlights of disease processes, you are able to concentrate on the 'deeper' stuff in nursing school.

One of my friends is doing a paramedic to RN transition program right now, she started in January and will graduate in December.

In my ER half of the staff was Paramedics for several years before nursing. The facility is lucky, to have cross educated personal. Yes, there is some differences.. basically in nursing you are taught a little bit about a lot, where as a Paramedic you are taught a lot about a little bit....

Even our CEO was the former EMS director, this helps get some recognition for the ER staff.

Actually, I went back to the field full time, as I pursue my ANP. I make just as much with my nearly 25 yrs as a medic and my 18 yrs as a RN. With only 10 shifts a month is easier for me at school....

I agree, it all depends on you education as a Paramedic, the same is true in nursing.

Good luck in you pursuit,

Right now in my LVN to RN Transition class we have one girl who is a Paramedic to RN Transition student. She's great! She has so much insight and experience working in that field. But we did have to teach her how to make a bed last summer. And the foley, etc. But, she helped us with starting IV's. She has transitioned well; I think she's going to be terrific in an ER/ICU when she graduates.

I'm sure it depends on the school you are applying to regarding if the process is easier to get into nursing school.
