OU and UCO Nursing

Good info. How can you apply for both colleges when they have different requirements? I'm a freshman at OKCCC and deciding where I want to go to nursing school. I looked at UCO's requirements http://www.comsc.ucok.edu/~mcdaniel/nursing/ and it seemed like a lot of classes to me... I'm really confused as to what I need to do and where I want to go. The more I hear about OU's program, the less I want to attend.

Both UCO and OU have similiar pre-req's, in fact I think they are almost exactly the same so I'm not sure why you think UCO had a lot--OU is the same way. The only difference is that at UCO in order to apply for their program you need to take 3 of their "pre-nursing" classes prior to starting the nursing program (you can take them the spring or summer before you start the program like I am doing): Intro to Nursing, Individual & Fam Develop Across the Lifespan and Fundamentals of Nursing + Lab. Actually that is the only reason I went to UCO was to get those classes done in order to apply to their program as well as OU's (I want my BSN).

The best thing to do IMO is to make sure you have the pre-reqs for all the college you want to apply at just to make you chances for admissions greater. UCO and OU are pretty much the same so that was easy to do, Rose State has a good program as well as OSU-OKC, actually all 4 of those programs have very similar pre-reqs (with the ADN programs having less oviously), OKCCC requires a few pre-reqs that none of the others require such as medical terminology and their math for meds class.

The lady from OU said they go give preference to male applicants with all other things being equal. Like if a female applicant had a 3.8 GPA and the male had a 3.8 and their nursing supplimental were the same the male would be given preference because they are trying to seek more diversity in their student nursing body. Thought that was interesting.

I personally, if I get accepted to both OU and UCO I will chose OU over UCO only because their NCLEX pass rates are about the same (she also told me I could check with the BON online and it lists all the NCLEX pass rates) and OUHSC is only about 10 mins from my house where it takes me 30 mins to get to UCO. But either way, I just want to get in ANYWHERE! LOL But I am also wanting to find out which schools around here have the best retention rates.

If you scroll down it lists OU's pre-reqs and you can see they are the same as UCOs (except UCO has those 3 classes I talked about before: Fundamentals, etc).

Hope that might help you out a little bit. I can't belive I am finally done with all my pre-req's, it seems to take forever doesn't it? LOL Oh, when I took Psych Statistics (which is required by OU and UCO Nursing) I took it at Rose State with a wonderful female teacher (she teaches on tues/thrs nights...her name escapes me but I would remember it if I saw it), she was awesome and explained everything SO WELL, I made an A in her class--she had you keep a statistical notebook and you were allowed to use that on the tests which really helped.

Yeah, they are about the same. I dont know what I was thinking. I am from Edmond, and would rather not live there again for UCO, but like I said, the more I hear about it, the less I want to go to OU. I heard they have so many students and not enough teachers and you have to rely on the internet lots of times, and passing tests is hard. Maybe someone can chime in with more info.

Hey guys I'm currently a student at OU in OKC, and I can tell you that it really isn't easy to get into, and since both the pre reqs are similar I would suggest applying to both because some of my close friends didn't get into OU and now they have to wait another year!

I did speak with some people, and they all agreed that a difference btw OU and UCO is that OU is LARGELY college students 20-23 years old, and with UCO they have more older students applying. I'm not sure if this matters to you, but I just thought I would let you know. In a general class that I have this semester everyone has to attend who got accepted and I think I've seen 2 people who are over the age of 23.

I'm sorry to hear your not liking the program; that it seems disorganized--that must be frusterating I wonder if they just have too many students or something or not enough teachers or something?

Oh wow, and yes that is something that does matter to me so thanks for bringing it up. I am soon to be 32 and have 2 little girls so it is important to me to have that support with people who are like me (I think most of us feel that way, it just helps). I feel really positive about getting into UCO so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

My husband works down at the OUHC and has for 15 years and also commented on the OU nursing program...that everyone seemed so young and he wondered if there was some sort of bias or something (who knows).

I don't necessarily think there is a bias, but they do give major points for previously attending OU and getting all the pre reqs there, and I just think it's young girls (including me) that started at OU and are going straight into nursing, so we got major points for that.

Are you planning on starting next year (aug?) If you get into OU and decide to come let me know. If so, I'll keep all my objectives and test study guides that take HOURS to fill out for you. A friend of mine did that for me last semester so I get to spend more time studying instead of looking up all the answers. Just let me know.

Just adding my two cents...Don't automatically discount the private schools because of cost. I chose OCU over OU because I received more financial aid (scholarships & loans) money from OCU. (My only regret is being ineligible for OU alum football tickets!) Of course I don't know your individual situations but it might be worth your time to look into it.Good luck to all of you!StephOCU '94

Well I'm now a senior graduating this semester so some things have changed from my original post. You will need to talk with Brenda who is the nursing adviser and she can give you the details.

I know when I applied 2 years ago we had to have Fundamentals of Nursing, Intro to Nursing, and Human Development before entering the program but now the program has changed and I don't really know how it is for those applying now. Brenda is your best bet.
