Orientation almost over

M almost done with my orientation period and I'm both excited and nervous 3 mos is a long time but only working 3 days a week u realize it's not that many actual days either. I work nights and the staff is awesome so I feel like if I need help it will still be Avialable to me. One of my concerns is though that people leave medsurg so much I've noticed the turn over so it seems like the long term nurses are constantly precepting. My current preceptor mentioned she has barely worked a single night in the last year where she hasn't had to orientate someone and she just misses being a nurse. This really struck a cord with me. I LOVE doing my job and would hate to precept all the time where u r constantly having to watch another nurse do your job and just make sure they do it right. I'm curious if other nurses on medsurg have the same experience ? I want to be a nurse not a full time trainer I know u won't be asked to precept for awhile but some nurses only 6 mo on the floor are already orientating new grads. So it's possible I could be in this situation sooner than I'd like. I'm grateful for my preceptor and I know someone has to do it but A I wouldn't feel qualified for atleast a year and B I want to be a nurse if it was a constant thing I could see myself burning out on it too.

What's the problem? With all these unemployed nurses I'd be thanking God at least You have a job. Ijs

I'm not sure you understand my concern. I went to school busted my butt and have student loans so that I could have more than "just a job" but so that I could have the job I love. I'm sorry if you find my question offensive in some manner. R u employed? Because I asked if other nurses were experiencing the same thing on MEDSURG. I didn't ask to be judged for having a REAL concern about nursing on medsurg. I like medsurg but if high turn over is a common thing and constant precepting is part of working that speciality I could see myself looking for a transfer to another unit. Of course I'm glad I have a job! Maybe u should move here if u don't have a job my floor seems to be constantly hiring.

Whoa, relax. Seriously, if you took offense at that simple comment, you might have a difficult time adjusting to the realities of nursing.

As to your question, you might be able to just tell your bosses that you don't want to precept. For all you know, this nurse just hasn't had the cohones to do this, so they keep having to precept.

" Really I thought it was well defined in my text. "Id be thankful I had a job " u can try and make out like its no big deal but the poster didn't address my concern just offered an uppity reply. I've since read several of her posts and they are all laced with advice that sounds condescending, and what I find is she hasn't even begun a nursing program yet. So yes I find it offensive when someone who isn't even a nurse yet acts like my question isn't valid. Also I asked if other medsurg nurses experience the same thing that has yet to be answered. I didn't ask for advice on how to avoid it. I had no problem telling my employer I don't want to be rushed into charge, I'll have no problem talking to her about precepting as well if I feel it's too soon.

Also I have a long history in hospital medical setting so I'm aware of the "realities" the way I choose to react on a web board is less guarded then I would in a professional setting. But I appreciate your vote of confidence :)

On my floor, and on nights, the preceptors are the ones who have been there the longest. Because we also have the turnover you talked about, there are very few who are available to precept. I would imagine they could feasibly get tired of it, but at least on my floor they don't seem to mind. Plus, we can choose not to precept.
