online labs?

Published

Can someone expand on how an online lab works? I have taken a lot of online courses, but never a lab. I read a few people are doing AP online- what do you "do" in an online lab?? I might consider it!

My A&P was online....my "labs" were essentially lots of pictures and identifying the parts via the pictures....that was it.

My A&P had pictures for some of the labs and computerized animation for the rest.

So was it mainly identification, or did you do a "mock dissection?" Years ago I found a web site that was a virtual frog dissection (for my son's science) and I thought it was really cool. Is this the kind of thing that would be part of a online lab?

I am going through ccconline and I have labs in my chem and AP1. You order a lab kit which has everything you need. I get to work with HCl and gases and cool stuff in chem. In my AP lab, my last lab was a histology one with slides - 7 page lab report, yikes! The next one is on bones - I had to get a couple raw chicken legs, cook them, then put one in lemon juice and bake another. I then will compare them....something about the lemon juice and rickets is part of it - haven't gotten that far on it yet. My next one uses a chicken wing and will be exploring joints. I also have a cow eyeball and sheep brain to dissect. Should be lots of fun. All of these are done at home, and I just send in my report when I'm done. No online simple identification for me, there was even a 2' skeleton in my lab kit...very cool!

Hey!! That sounds awesome!! I love it, I think I am going to check it out!!

Thanks! Jennifer

In my online lab, I also did the chicken bone lab. We also had a CD that was a simulation of instruments and experiments that we would do in the lab. It wasn't exactly like being there but you got the general idea. The rest were just pictures of models that you would see in the lab.

I had dvd's for a hybrid chem class. For the dvd labs, you do the same type of experiments you'd do in lab but through virtual simulations. All the lab equipment is there but you point and click to use it as per experiment instructions. e.g. The virtual digital scale is pretty kool. Then you collect data and write your lab report which is the bigger part of the process anyway. In a way the lab simulator has its merits because if you screw up you get to do it over so that your numbers crunch correctly - you don't have that luxury in real time labs.

I would have loved the simulation. I was doing a chem lab and spilled my stuff! I had to order 5g of composite material for $20 to replace it!! Yup, it sucked. Redid it and got an A though. :)
