Online A&P

Hello, everyone. :)

I decided to enter the medical profession and am either going into nursing or radiography, but the more research I do into the professions, the more I think I would like to be a nurse. I already have an A.A. and I am taking AP I online. To enter the nursing program at my school I need to complete this class, A&P 2, and Microbiology as I've already taken the other pre-reqs and I have a high GPA. I am doing quite well in the class so far where grades are concerned I have a 99 (I haven't taken the proctored midterm or final yet, so that will more than likely go down), however I don't feel like I am really learning (read: retaining) anything. Even so, I'm sure I will pass. I am afraid to enter the nursing program and then do terribly because I don't remember anything from this class. I'm also afraid that maybe I am second guessing myself. Should I take the class again in person? I am due to have a baby in Sept and am registered for the online A&P 2 for the fall but think I am going to try to get it hybrid instead. Any advice would help.

I promise anything I say here is NOT meant to be taken in a snarky tone. That being said...

When you take your tests and quizzes, are you using your book and notes? I am taking A&P I online and I noticed at first I did not feel as if I was learning a thing. Since then, I put in that much more time studying and memorizing, memorizing, memorizing and then memorizing some more. I finally feel as if I am retaining the information, and I DO NOT use books or notes, even though my quizzes are timed to allow us to do so. (Tests are NOT though.) Since I started closing my books for my quizzes too, it has been completely different.

Oh, I also go online and find quizzes and games and that has helped a LOT too.

One more thing I should add...

Online classes can be a difficult thing. I have been going to school online for two years now and the one thing I have learned is that you ONLY get out of them what you put into them. They can be great, but you really do need to treat it like you are going to a physicial classroom.

Good luck! :D

I think I learn most of my A&P during my in person labs. For instance, we had lab on Thursday. We dissected a pluck (trachea, lungs, heart, diaphragm.) I don't think online labs are the same. I could feel the hard cartilage of the trachea. I cut through the trachea to get into the lungs and when I squeezed the lungs I could see bubbles coming out of the bronchioles from the surfactant. We got to put an air compressor in the trachea before dissection and watch the lungs inflate. I just don't think it's the same online.

If you don't think you are retaining information, it won't hurt you to take it in person. But keep in mind, you won't remember everything!
