The OIG Exclusion List is a database maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) that includes individuals and organizations barred from participating in federal health care programs due to issues like fraud or abuse, especially Medicare or Medicaid fraud along with healthcare boards license actions.  Defaulting on federal student health care loans or scholarships can find one on the OIG list. Those who are excluded can receive no payment from Federal health care programs for any items or services they furnish, order, or prescribe, including providing nursing care.. Therefore, most facilities screen applicants and staff Search the Exclusions Database  prior to hiring and yearly.

Quote

Mandatory exclusions: OIG is required by law to exclude from participation in all Federal health care programs individuals and entities convicted of the following types of criminal offenses: Medicare or Medicaid fraud, as well as any other offenses related to the delivery of items or services under Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, or other State health care programs; patient abuse or neglect; felony convictions for other health care-related fraud, theft, or other financial misconduct; and felony convictions relating to unlawful manufacture, distribution, prescription, or dispensing of controlled substances.

One can Apply for Reinstatement  90 days before the end of the period specified in the exclusion notice letter.

Hope this helps.

Karen does that mean if a persons license was taken from them from 1 state that you are on that list. ?but have a nursing license in another? If you are on this list will this mean there is no chance of being hired as a nurse? I'm sorry for all the questions I just need to know these answers and have no one to ask  I appreciate you

OIG is a Federal Government List. You get on that list by FIRST by being on your states Medicaid Dept of Health Exclusion List. Once you get on a state Medicaid Exclusion List, it automatically (by law) triggers an OIG (Federal Review) to see if you are placed on the Federal Government OIG list. If you go on the OIG list, it applies to every state. Any and all licenses are effected in every state Regardless of whether State B or C or D did not touch your license. Your license can be clean in Kansas and Kentucky and you get on the OIG list due to an event in Missouri and the Missouri BON took your license or suspended or revoked or surrendered in Missouri, etc. This follows over and effects Kentucky and Kansas, even if Kansas and Kentucky leave yoir license alone. It doesnt matter.. You can't work in any facility in the USA (Regardless of an intact license in that state) that does Federal business (Medicaid and medicare.) So, it goes Beyond a Nurse Board License issue. The OIG list doesn't care if your license is clean in Kansas or Kentucky, you can't work for the most part. For example, nearly every hospital in America has at least one patient that takes Medicaid or Medicare. Dialysis? Nope. Mental Health? Nope. About the only thing you can do as a nurse is find an aeasthetician clinic which is pay out of pocket. Want to know how competitive those jobs are? HIGHLY. There are few to any openings because nurses love these jobs. They don't leave them. And, the plastic surgeon or NP running the clinic isn't going to hire someone in recovery for a very selective job with tons of applications.

Not only does the OIG list effect your ability to work as a nurse in every state, it effects your ability to work for ANY facility in ANY field that does contracting with the Federal Government. Want to drive a truck? If that company hauls items that have a government contract, you can't work for them. Want to get a real estate or bartender license or any other Healthcare license or go back to school for IT and do computer stuff? Good luck. A bartender or real estate license requires Federal Underwriting for your license and job, you cant do it. For example, Google and many IT companies have at least 1 contract of some kind with the Federal Government. You can't work there. You also can't work directly for the Federal Government.

All the above is why you NEVER SURRENDER your nurse license. Its a Disaster and it nearly always will get you on the OIG list. A surrendered license is treated like a revoked license. It literally not only cripples your career in nursing, it literally can effect other careers and can cripple your life.

Want to find a kind friend or employer who will hire you anyway while being on the list? Not going to happen. Employers who hire people or Keep People who are on the OIG list face Federal government fines of up to 10,000 dollars per DAY! Employers across the country regularly check OIG list every 1 to 2 months and yes, there is a dedicated person in Human Resources that does this and it's easy. They have all of the names of every employee in their organization and enter them in one swoop by AI platform into the OIG Database and click enter. A match will pop up in 5 seconds. The search takes about 5 to 10 seconds to do for the entire organization. If you are an employer there for 3 or 5 or 10 years and you were awarded Employee of the Month 9 times and then one day your name pops up on the OIG list? Your job ends that same day. Literally within 5 minutes or as long as it takes for the Risk Management Officer to walk down to your work location and remove you.
