OCCC Winter 2008 LPN program

Published

Hello everyone,

Just wondering if anyone had applied to the Oakland Community College LPN program and was accepted or denied to the Winter 2008 program and their feelings (especially if you were denied). This being the first year they went to GPA

I had a 3.385 it just wasn't good enough. Those that got in had a GPA range of 3.5 to 4.0. 30 students were selected out of 97 applicants.

In case you are wondering why I don't apply for the ADN program. The reason is the LPN program is best suited to my needs at this point in my life (I'm over 55)

I'm discouraged but not totally defeated. :paw:

:no:I'm taking pre-req's right now. Reading posts like your get me very discouraged. Im almost 37 and making a lot of sacrifice to go to school. Im freaking out that it will all be for nothing.

What do students who have a good gpa but not 'good enough' for NS do with themselves? What are the options once all these classes are completed and you dont get into NS?

I think that as long as the school is going to play it that way they might as well just have a pass/fail instead of a grade. A could be to pass and a B could be fail.

heyy I was denied as well. I have a 3.36 not good enough like you said. very discouraging. you didnt get into LPN with that GPA?>? I thought there was no wait at all for the LPN program!? ahh that was going to be my backup plan.. maybe we will be in it together next year.. try to keep your head up, I know this sucks.

Hey guys, was the GPA for the sciences you took? Is that what OCC is going on the overall GPA for the sciences or pre-req's?

First of all --- I am so glad that someone is finally posting to my LPN topic other than only seeing ADN topics for OCC. I too am a PCT working at St John's Hospital Macomb since May 2005

I thought the same as you did regarding no wait for LPN OCC program. I also discovered at the Mar 20th 2008 Nur Seminar that of all the 97 applicants - 17 were ADN applicants applying for LPN Have you attended a Nursing Seminar yet? If not, there is still one in Jun at the Southfield Campus before the new July 1 deadline. Hopefully, we both will be able to be in LPN for Winter 2009 start together.

The GPA is based on all 6 required pre req courses. Go to OCC website and click on Southfield Campus for LPN info flyer. There is a new deadline for applying to the LPN program for Winter 2009 start - Its July 1. Maybe all three of us will be admitted to the Winter 2009 Class!

Catlover,

Have you taken the MPT yet? You said that a few ADN students were applying to the LPN program too, OCC allows that? That doesn't seem fair to do that if thats the case.

Catlover,

yes, I went to the nursing seminar already.

so what are you doing now? retaking classes or just going to try again next year and hope for the best?

Sirena922,

Yes, I agree with you about allowing ADN applicants to apply for LPN.

Since the competion is even more fearce for the ADN - example there were over 500 applicants for the Fall 2008 program per the Nursing Seminar. They selected from applicants having GPA's from 3.62 to 4.0.

The nursing dept stated this at the Mar 20th seminar I attended at Southfield for LPN & ADN perspective students.

At least one good thing starting this year is:

Say an ADN applicant applies for the LPN and is accepted - Their ADN application is pulled. Thus, they can't have their cake and eat it too should they decide to decline their LPN slot.

Also, since there is such a strong competition for ADN program and they decide to apply for the LPN (probably felt the same - it would be easier to get in), well you can now see how it could affect the GPA for all LPN applicants.

I took the MPT last May.

I have registered to retake ENG 1510 for Summer 1 at Royal Oak Campus to boost GPA and give it one more try.

As a added note to the Mar 20th seminar, some asked what the nursing dept felt the GPA would be for the Winter 2009 applicants. They said, "We can't really say, it could even be lower than the 3.5 for students applying for Winter 2008". I wouldn't totally count this statement since its again so ifffy, but figure from at least a 3.5 to 4.0 again.

Maybe one good thing for sure - with a July 1 deadline and a Sept 15 deadline response from them for acceptance or denial won't be so dragged out and totally nerve racking.

omg with who!?! so am I!!! haha I would tell you who I am taking mine with but I forgot and the OCC online services is closed for the night! I hate how they do that! I took it in royal oak though bc the teacher seemed really good. I need to get an A!

I know what you mean with it being "iffy" it could also be even higher now! because people know what to expect so Im sure everyone is trying to bump up their GPA's and the newcomers are going to make sure they do exceptionally well the first time around :vlin:

Boy oh Boy - talk about a small world. My instructors name is Robinson taking it for 8 weeks. I have heard thru the grapevine He is Great! I too need to get an A. It would be wild if we have the same instructor.
