I've been an ob nurse for 19 years and have just accepted the position of ob staff educator/supervisor. I will be doing the annual competencies and skills labs but am looking for some other educational ideas. Also at the last hospital that I worked at we were constantly receiving brochures and pamphlets on nursing conferences but seem to receive very few here. Any ideas on how to contact different agencies to get on a mailing list? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

evie,
I'm a Med-Surg educator. I've only been in this role for 9 months. When I started, I made up some educational request forms to be filled out by staff and had them turn in their request for educational needs. I discussed educational needs with the supervisors and with risk management. They really know where the need is because they get all of the incident reports. Another thing to do is round daily on the unit and spend time with the nurses and review their charting. These are some ways to determine what the needs of your unit are.
Do a google search on nursing conferences. You should be able to get on mailing lists that way. Hope some of this helps. Good luck with your new job!!

I'd contact your professional organization. Register/join as an educator. Believe me, you'll get lots of pamphlets and literature. Maybe even join the ANA. If you already belong to one or more professional organizations, be sure to change your title with them.
Does your institution help you with the cost? (Mine wouldn't) It can be considered part of your job to belong....

Our professional nurse's organization for OB/GYN/Newborn. Also source of good study materials/books and you get CEUs for some.
Also don't forget Strong-Perifacts. Not all education has to be in a classroom to be effective and documented! You can earn up to like 32 CEUs/year participating in this program and it's not too expensive (versus sending everyone to conferences, if your budget won't allow it).
Here is where you can get info on Strong-Perifacts Ed program:
