OB certification recommendations?

Published

Hi all! I am a new grad RN currently working but not in my desired area. Are there any certifications you would recommend to help me land a mom/baby or l & d position? I know it's a tough market so I want to get a leg up. Thanks!

From what I've heard, getting NRP really isn't useful because if you don't use it there is no point. I am working towards becoming a doula and certified lactation counselor.

I am planning on becoming a certified childbirth educator to help me break into the field. And well, because I am genuinely interested in teaching about childbirth! :-)

NRP (neonatal resuscitation program) is mandatory for our Mother-Baby unit and L&D, and has to be renewed every 2 years. Also, BLS (basic life support for health care provider). If you are coming from a different area, it may be acceptable to do that after you land the posistion. Just knowing about it during an interview would be impressive. Also, joining or knowing about AWHONN. Do some reading on PP, LD, lactation and women's health, to see what interests you. What is your main reason for wanting ob? It isn't all touchy feely and 'look at the baby' fun. It is serious nursing care. The same thing goes for NICU. Mainly, getting some experience under your belt and being an enthusiastic learner is your best bet. Good luck. And congrats on getting a job and a foot in the door!
