Oakland U BSN program

I'm expanding my options to bachelor degree programs, and OU is at the top of my list. I was hoping I could get some information first-hand from current (or future) OU BSN nurses! I called the nursing office and left a voice mail to set up an appointment to speak with an academic adviser. In the mean time, I've got you guys!

My main questions have to do with the admissions process. Unbeknownst to me, I have already taken -some- OU prerequisites. (Hoping they will transfer!) With that being said, will being a transfer student hurt my chances of entering the program? It's way cheaper for me to go to a community college and then transfer the classes to OU. I can only imagine that OU will use this against transfer students like me, in attempts to try and get their students to take classes at OU. Any truth to this assumption?

My next question regards entrance exams. Every community college I have attended or considered attending has required a HESI/NET test and a high score along with your GPA as a way to determine who gets accepted. But when I looked at the .PDF for the program, I didn't see anything about an entrance exam. With that being said, how do they determine who gets in and who doesn't? I also read about an in person interview. What is that like? Will they use that as a way to determine who will enter the program and who won't?

I think that's all I can think of for now. Thanks in advance for any replies and information!

Hi there, I go to OU. First of all, it does not matter if you take all of your pre-reqs at a community college. I got a liberal arts Associate's degree, and took all of my pre-nursing classes at OCC and they all transfered. Talk to a counsler at your cc, they should be able to help you. I did not take an entrance exam. I also did not have a personal interview. They only interview you if you are applying for the acclerated second degree program. If you go on Ou's SON website they have information sessions about the program where they will answer all of your questions. Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the reply :) I will be attending an information seminar in August. I'm kind of excited that there isn't an entrance exam... but that could also work against me! lol

I'm going to the session in August too. Did you apply to Oakland already? I'm still waiting to hear back from general admissions. I go to Schoolcraft right now.

I'm waiting to hear back from them as well. I put in an app last week. I read on their website that before fall semester starts, it takes a little bit longer to process applications.

I'm currently enrolled at Macomb CC. I took A+P and comp 2 at Baker college... I'm afraid they might not transfer to OU :( If they do, I'll only have 3 more classes to take before I can apply to OU's nursing program :D How about you?

I pretty much read through as much info on the OU site and OU Nursing site that I could find about the program.. oh, and the nursing program info packet I picked up when I went to an OU open house. That was helpful enough for now. It's even better to get feedback from people who are already accepted or have been through the program though- that's what brought me here. I'm just going to the session to further solidify my decision.

I was signed up for Micro already, which is needed for the degree but it isn't quite yet required (as a pre-req) so I may switch that out with A&P to help move me along quicker. After that- same here- just need 3 classes: the 2 chem and that bio one. Did you take that? it's like intro bio or something. I took bio101 @ Scraft but that apparently is a step under the one they are wanting. Wish that wasn't so. I'm going to call tomorrow to check on that one with someone though.

Oh damn, yeah I need to take intro bio, bio/organic chem, a PHIL class, and micro. So 4 classes. But I don't think they consider the PHIL classes as part of the pre nursing GPA (not 100% sure on this though), so -if-, by some miracle, I'm able to get in before I get a chance to take PHIL, I'll have to take that at some time during the program.

I would definitely find out if that class is going to fulfill the requirement. It would suck to think you've only got 3 more classes to go, only to find that you need to add one more to the list :/ That's what I fear might happen with my Baker classes! :( I hate to have to wait until August to find this out, but I tried to ask certain questions over the phone, and the person I spoke to said to just go to the advising session first. /shrug/

The info packet says that PHIL is a pre-req, but it is NOT factored into your pre-nursing GPA. You can manage squeezing that into a biology or chem schedule I'm sure. That's what I'm doing between A&P and Chem Basics for Fall. It's not going to be easy from here-on-out, but I'm going to be jamming my schedule with BIO, Micro, and Chem classes if I have to to speed things along! lol

Haha Parsons, I definitely know how you feel! I just want to be DONE with pre-reqs already. BUT if it's going to take me a year to get into a program (due to wait lists, not being accepted, whatever) at least I'll have other classes to work on.

I was thinking about stuffing a PHIL class in with bio, chem, and micro, but I'm going to be quite overwhelmed with those 3 science classes alone. I know I wouldn't have to worry too much about the PHIL class since that isn't factored into the pre-nursing GPA, but knowing my luck I'll walk away with a C in that class and then they'll change things so PHIL will be a part of the pre-nursing gpa! lol

UGH I know! I've been in community college long enough and have taken enough random major-less credits to have gotten a Bachelor's already.

We're only half way there, but we can do it! lol
