NYC Nursing Programs-Thoughts please!

Published

I've finally decided that I am going to change my career to nursing. I'm nervous and excited all together. I am looking at schools right now and would like any advice on them. I have all the brochures and paperwork on the schools. What I need most is personal feedback from current students or graduates of the program.

I am looking at:

1. School of Nursing St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center

2. LaGuardia Community College

3. Queens Borough Community College

4. Philips Beth Israel School of Nursing

Your feedback is GREATLY appreciated!

are these schools for the rn program? if so, you need to have most of your pre-requisites before you can even be considered. anyway, you may want to post this in new york forum and i am sure you will get alot of replies there.

good luck,

All except LaGuardia are RN programs. However, LaGuardia has an LPN-RN bridge program, where you will still have to take (most of) the same pre-requisites that the RNs have taken to enter their LPN program. This is done in order to eliminate most of the courses and bridge over. At this time, I am hearing that they have only 20 seats for their LPN to RN bridge. They also have an RN program. Most community colleges require a VERY high GPA in order to assure acceptance into their programs, so, while taking their pre-requisites, try VERY HARD not to earn less than a B+ in their pre as well as co-requisites. I remember that a student with a 3.7 GPA was still not accepted. It all depends on the curve of students and the number of seats available. LaGuardia has about 60 seats for those going straight into the RN program and what they do is take the 60 highest GPAs and you can only apply for candidacy twice...after that, you have to go and apply at a different school. Queensboro is basically the same, because it is another community college.

I go to Beth Israel for their nursing continuing education courses, and seems to be a wonderful school. If their RN program is run like their continuing ed, then, I would say that you would have a phenomenal education. I think that they have to take the NLN exam, and again, they take the highest scores. Not sure of how many seats are available each semester, but you have to aim to go high. If you need to study certain areas for the NLN, such as science, math and reading, they have books that you can probably order on line from Amazon.com. Get tutoring if you need it, because, again, aim HIGH. I don't know anything about Saint Vincent's.

I strongly suggest that you evaluate your strengths as well as you weaknesses and address them early with classes and tutoring if you think it is necessary. This is not being said to scare you, or make you feel that it can't be done...please believe me on that. Positive thinking goes a long way with achieving your goals and desires. Early preparation and good timing is essential. I was not a good math student, and I took a remedial course to help me to pass the ACT test for math, and I had a private tutor to help me with anatomy and physiology, a VERY CHALLENGING course for most people.

Best of luck to you in your goals!

Thank you very much for the compliment! Preparing early is the best thing to me, because I was able to put all of that behind me by the time I actually started taking classes. And, as an adult with responsibilities, you may begin to appreciate what you are working on moreso than before. Good luck, and keep us posted!!

Hello. Native Newyorker here residing in TX as a military family. From personal knowledge, most any school in NY that has a nursing program is high standard for we have an excellent educational system. History says Beth Israel is one of the top rated hospitals..good luck.
