I was just wondering if anyone started a nursing career later on in life after maybe being in another field first. Sometimes things like life, children, finances, time and even scheduling may have prevented the start of a nursing program in the past so they delve into another profession to get things more balanced out. After a few years they may have decided now was a better time to get the degree in nursing they wanted from the start, any ideas or opinions on this, I'm just curious.

These are just the ones on the first page when you go to the search box and type in "nursing second career." Knock yourself out.

I worked in the horse business for many (25) years and then I decided I needed something a little more steady after having kids. I went back to school to be a teacher (it was between teaching and nursing). After my contract was not renewed (non-tenured masters teacher) I went back to school again and got my nursing degree. At 47. Best thing I have done. Probably should have become a nurse first, but I don't believe in regrets as I believe that what happens before affects the now. I love nursing.

It's quite common now for people who joined nursing as their second, sometimes third career. Half of the people in my BSN class were in their 40s or 50s. The good thing about being an older student is that you know what you want and you don't give up easily. :) Good luck!
