Nursing school as a mom

Published

Good morning all!

I am in my last semester of prerequisites before apply to the nursing program. Also I am a mother of a 4 year old precious little girl. How do most of you handle your child's interest in your anatomy, micro and patho books? For instance, yesterday my daughter came to me when studying patho and was asking questions about an ouchy picture in my book. It was a hand with several electrical burns. I gently explained to her what it was and why but is this something maybe I should sheld from her? Part of me feels it may be something too advanced for her My Little Pony loving eyes but another part of me thinks it could be educational and I don't want to discourage her desire to learn. Thoughts?

My daughter was 5 I think when I did A&P. I kept her busy when I was watching her by engaging her with my studies and she helped me out a lot by learning with me by me pointing out bones and muscles on her. My wife's taking A&P now and she's doing the same with our son, who's so interested he watches videos with her on youtube (even powerpoint lectures).

It cracks me up when our kids run to me saying things like, "Dad, I bumped my patella on the table and it really hurts!"

I have a 6, 3 and 18 month old. The two older ones love learning about everything I am learning. I have found honesty has always worked best with them and I just explain things in a softer way they can understand.

I think you should encourage her curiosity. That is awesome that she is interested. I wouldn't show her something traumatizing, like a decapitated head or anything, but wounds and such are not a big deal, IMO. If my middle son ever gets a scratch or cut, he'll tell me he "scratched his epidermis" lol! I think it's great.
