Nursing in Oz

Hi guys

I was wondering what it's like to Nurse in a big hospital in Sydney. I am almost finished my 1st yr in Nursing and I hope to do Forensic Nursing (Sexual Assault Examiner) but work in the ER while doing this. Are the Er's busy in Sydney? I live in a relatively small place in the UK and the ER here can be quite dull, I know I work better under pressure so I am hoping that I can find a home in the ER in Sydney.

As far as Forensic Nursing goes it is only the SANE, law aspect I am interested in, not working in Prisons or with repeat offenders. This has always been a huge interest for me, would this career be possible in Sydney?

Thanks

Do bears scratch in the woods? From what I have heard most of them are as busy as a blowie at a barbie. Or in other words yes they are usually busy, very busy!!

I am not sure though about sexual assault nurses - I think that rather than having just one nurse who specialises in this there is a course that people who work in A&E can take but I could be proven wrong on this.

The following story from the SMH might shed some light on this.

A turf war is looming between the State Government and doctors over the proposal to train nurses to collect forensic evidence from victims of sexual assault.

The state branch of the Australian Medical Association has criticised NSW Health for failing to maintain properly trained and resourced doctors in sexual assault services, saying introducing nurse examiners will not solve the problem. However, Jean Edwards, the co-ordinator of sexual assault medical services at Northern Sydney Health and one of the country's most respected doctors in the field, said there were many nurses with the experience to take on an examiner's position.

"Those working in sexual health clinics who do examinations of people, nurses in family planning clinics and midwives ... would be perfectly capable provided they are given added training to collect forensic evidence," Dr Edwards said. "I am not suggesting that we do not need doctors ... but I think it is at least possible for a component of work to be done by forensically trained nurses, who are not any less competent than [a] doctor who only does this occasionally."
