Nursing in Ontario

I have a current RN license (New York) and a UK RGN and have been living and working in the UK for over six years. I am an American passport holder and am married to my husband who is a UK passport holder.

How difficult would it be to get a job in Ontario and what would I have to do. My husband and I have been frequent visitors to Ontario and would love to re-locate there. Does anyone know of any hospitals offering signing on initiatives?

My husband works from home which he can easily do on any computer so he will not be looking for work - just me.

You would have to contact the CNO (College of Nurses of Ontario) and apply for licensure through them. Like many of the provinces, Ontario requires the BSCN for licensure of RNs. The mods will probably move this to the International Forum.

Any questions regarding immigration to Canada needs asking in the International forum. Any questions regarding living and working in Canada can be asked in here.

You will need to apply, as mentioned by previous post, to CNO and be assessed, a lot will depend on how long ago you trained in the UK. You need both theory and practical hours in all areas (General, mental health, paeds, midwifery) Once sorted with CNO and employer you need to apply for a temp work permit to London CIC and have a medical, they will tell you when to sort medical out. If your husband is planning on working from home he will still need to get a TWP and send in application, ideally same time as you. Suggest a good read both in this and the International forum as much already written

Thank you both.

However for some clarification I am an American trained RN ( and those Americans reading this will understand that an American RN covers most specialities ) my qualifications were accepted by The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council and I was given the UK qualification of Registered General Nurse. I have been nursing for over 28 years and have a wide range of experience. Currently working in a NICU/SCBU

I am not asking for help with any immigration aspects as I am fairly clear what my husband and I need to do.

What I am asking is there any nurses out there that know of any hospitals that are offering any incentives in Ontario and how easy/difficult is it to obtain a license in Ontario.

Ontario requires that you have your degree for licensure as an RN.

Not aware of any hospitals offering incentives but best thing probably is contact ones you are interested in. You just need to meet IEN requirements and at some stage sit/pass CRNE before they will issue a license

thank you all

however i have found tucked away within the ontario nursing board the following:-

u.s.: registered nurses from the u.s. who wrote the state board test pool examination before july 1, 1982 have met the ontario registration examination requirement and do not have to write the examination. applicants who wrote the national council of licensure examination (nclex) after june 30, 1982 are required to write the crne.

i passed my ny rn licence in 1981 - however i have not been able to discover whether this was a state board test pool exam - anybody know what this is?? i seem to draw a blank on the internet.

i would say the best thing to do is contact cno give them your info and see what they say, they do at the end of the day have final say

new york (as was all of the 50 states) administered the state board test pool exam prior to the nclex. if you wrote your exam in 1981, you wrote a state board test pool exam.

as a side note, i was licensed in new york as an rn in 2006, and in ontario as an rn in 2008. feel free to msg me if there's anything i can try to answer.

cheers

That sounds fantastic - it would seem that I will need to do is find a job and my Ontario license should be a matter of course.

I have written to Ontario Nursing Board for confirmation but as yet not received a response.

Thank very much for that information =- go figure I wrote the State Board Test Pool Exam!!!!
