Hello,
I am a highschool junior considering going into nursing after graduation. I am pretty sure that the profession would be well suited to my personality, but would like to see nurses in action just to see what the daily challenges/joys of the job really are like. Do some hospitals let prospective nurses come in and shadow their nurses?
Also, what was the nursing program like? Was it very difficult? Did you feel like it prepared you well for the demands of the job? How many clinical hours did you need to work? Also how many degrees do you need to persue nursing?
Thank you!

Welcome to allnurses.com and congratulations about planning ahead for college and your future career!
My suggestions:
- Get through high school - enjoy it and be the best you can be!
- Talk to a guidance counselor about possible college and career choices
- Talk to your parents - do they know a neighbor or friend that is a nurse?
To my knowledge, our hospital does not let high school students shadow an RN. Once you are a *little* older - you can get a job as a nursing assistant to get a "taste" of what it may be like. Again, perhaps your parents or a counselor can direct you to a local hospital for this.
Good luck!

Most hospitals have volunteer programs and these are often open to high school students. It's a great way to learn more about hospitals and healthcare careers.

Nursing is one of the most challenging undergraduate degrees out there so be prepared to put in some work. It is definitely worth it in the end and when you get some clinical experience under your belt you feel like you accomplish something everday.
Im currently a senior in a BSN program which is a bachelor of science in nursing but they have other programs like LPN, ADN and various other avenues to become a nurse. Though if you can go for the BSN. You only need your nursing degree to get a job and you must pass the NCLEX which is a big exam to get your license to practice. Good luck!
