Nursing math class questions

Next year i will be a senior in hs. I plan to go into nursing in college. I finished algebra 2 and did really well. Next year i am going to take trig for the first half of the year. But for the second semester should i take pre-calc or would that not be necessary?

If you are going for BSN statistics is usually a requirement, but for ADN, college math was enough which mainly consisted of algebra. Nursing math can get a little tricky, some people prefer to use the ratio method, others like to set up problems algebra style, it all depends on your preference. My suggestion would be to take the math class that would set you up for statistics because that seems to be the major math class people have trouble with, at least the people I know including myself. I'm in the process of bridging to my BSN and putting off stats as long as possible but I know I will have to face it sooner or later.

I think it's great that you're planning ahead! I would recommend taking pre-calc. You might decided to major in biology instead of nursing, or double major. The math background would benefit you in that case. Good luck!

Best to check directly with them!

The nursing programs that I know of all require Statistics. As stated before, best to check with the programs that you are going to be applying for. Good luck!

The only statistics at my school i AP statistics

Take as much math as you can, simply because the practice in logical thinking pays off. I take it "AP" is advanced practice? Dual college credit? Take it!

I took a lot of higher math in high school, didn't need it specifically for nursing but it paid off in the science prereqs. Also, when I took the required Stats course as a prereq, it was a piece of cake; which did help on my GPA and applications.

Not necessary in my opinion. Statistics was a prereq to apply to my nursing program. I would check your nursing program's requirements and see if it's required, and if it is, I'd take AP Stat to get that college credit! And if you pass the AP exam, you won't have to take it in college!

I looked online and i dont see anything about it. A couple schools just say its recomended

Oh. Then honestly, it doesn't really matter what you take. If I were you I would just take something that I could get an A in. It's senior year after all! And basic math/algebra/stoichiometry from Chemistry is all the math you'll use in nursing school.

BSN programs often require statistics, but not always. Statistics is a BEAR! If you could get a course in it, while in high school, and you're going into a BSN program, I'd recommend taking statistics over taking pre-calc. It will give you a jumpstart into college statistics.

Did you take chemistry? Math problems in nursing are set up alot like the ratio problems in inorganic chemistry. They're pretty easy to master, and in my opinion, kind of fun. Algebra has prepared you for such things, if you haven't taken inorganic chemistry.
