Nursing Intership

Hello ? I’m trying to find out what will be the best internship for me since im pursing my nursing degree. This will be my second year at Ivy Tech. My overall goal is to become a nurse practitioner. That being said i found a program for nursing students studying aboard. You will not get paid for it, and the cost is $2789. I can go to Mexico for 2 weeks and shadow doctors and nurses. I will get 3 meals a day. However, I will have to pay my plane ticket as well. I will stay at their homes to learn their cultures too! Or should I find intership programs in the United States? Like at Chicago where i’m from, or Harvard, John Hopkins? Which one will be beneficial for me in the long run?

Look for nurse externships/internships with local hospitals. These are PAID positions and are specifically for nursing students - often times they can lead to employment with the unit/hospital down the road.

Do hospitals hire nurse externs where you are? This is when you work as a nurse-in-training while you are still in school. In my area some hospitals will take you in your last semester and some will take you a full year before you expect to graduate. Like verene said, you are basically training for the job you will have when you do graduate, assuming all goes well and you like the unit. I started an externship over the summer and it's a great experience. It's one shift per week with a preceptor.

My school also had the study abroad programs, and I have some friends who have done them and loved them. There's no reason you couldn't do that (it's only two weeks) and start looking for an externship/internship at the same time.
