NORFOLK -- A nursing instructor at Tidewater Tech held four students in a classroom at gunpoint for nearly two hours this morning, emptying the North Military Highway building while hostage negotiators spoke with her by telephone, police said.
The situation ended without injuries. A police spokesman said the instructor told negotiators at 10:10 a.m. she had put the gun down. Students, however, said the hostages disarmed the woman.
The instructor, whose name was not released by police, was taken into custody. The students who were in the classroom were being interviewed by detectives.
The instructor had been armed with a .38-caliber handgun, police said.
It was unclear what prompted the standoff. Joe Brown, a male student, said he had been in the classroom prior to class with four other students, when the instructor asked him to get a felt-tipped marker at the office. When he returned, the door was locked, and paper obscured the window in the door.
A school official looked into the room through a gap in the paper and said, ``Call 911!'' Brown said.
That was around 8:30 a.m.
The building was emptying as many students arrived for classes. Many waited nearby until they were allowed back into the building.
