hello!!

this is my first time on allnurses website and I have read some concerns regarding nursing school, I also have a concern and would like your opinion.

my situation:

I am currently 3rd year nursing student and I have failed my first try and retake diagnostic exam (not board exam) and I will be having a meeting with the dean to discuss about what to do with my career. I feel tired, depressed and I think that nursing course is not for me anymore, I think my score on my diagnostic exam is a sign that I should stop.... I don't know. I want to switch to other course that is still in medical or science course as long as it will credit my previous subjects. what other courses can I take that is still in line on medical/science field and a non-licensed course? did anyone also experience the same as I did?? what did you do?? do you have motivational quotes or speech that you can share?

I know this post is a few months old but noticed that no one replied.  You have come really far to give up now.  However, if you absolutely know that you will not be happy being a nurse, it's not the end of the world to change careers.   However, nursing does offer a lot of different opportunities, some which are not also direct patient care so that is something to think about.  I wish you all the best in whatever you decide if you haven't already make a decision.

Hello, I'm also in this position because I've done 8 courses throughout 2 semesters and I failed half of them but I don't want to give up because nursing is my dream course and I'm not the kind of person to drop what I wanted to do. I'm not also in a position to direct where and what you are going to do but for me, you work hard to get where you are right now. All you have to do is take an extra effort and a lot of patience to finish the course. It will be hard but that's life anyways. Also, do you like the course? Because if you do, you can do it. Trust the process and especially, trust yourself.

Nursing schools tend to teach nursing in sections: med/surg, pediatrics, pharmacology, mental health… etc.  Then during that last semester they switch up an mix it all together with the diagnostic,  which is really testing your preparation for taking NCLEX/  safe practice exam, also different from the type of exams given in semesters prior.  It may be that they didn’t prepare you for the style of questioning. I would advise all nursing students to prepare for diagnostic/NCLEX style questions pertaining to each semester course during that semester instead of waiting for last semester to take the exam. Nursing is for you if you want it to be. It takes a lot of pre-preparation.
