Nursing as a career

I am a 17 year old male living in New York City and a Junior in High School looking to become a nurse. I am presently volunteering in the ER. I would welcome any advice to this career path! I am concerned about not being accepted into a program because all I hear about is how competitive it is.

You sound like you are on the right path to me! Keep up the hard work! Make some connections with the healthcare professionals you are working with so you can get some good references.

Volunteering in the medical field is an excellent start, Munzy and my advice to you would be to immerse yourself in the medical field. Take science classes, anatomy & physiology, etc, read up on areas that interest you, and watch movies and TV shows.

We old folks like to say, "If I had it to do over again, I would..." My completion to that statement would be "...go through LPN program while in High School".

Anomaly Senior High had several vocational programs and the LPN program was one of them. In three years, along with a high school diploma, a student could sit for the Illinois state board exam.

Also interesting, probably only to me, is that "Emergency!" was a popular show when I became an EMT in 1979 and "St. Elsewhere" was popular when I was going through the LPN program in 1983. I would watch those shows and think, "I know what they're talking about!"

That's how we learn: Through interest, association, and repetition.

Good luck to you, Munzy!
