Most staff nurses (who work the floors) are paid hourly. Never ever take a salaried staff nurse position.

With salaried, you are correct. You may work overtime, but you will not get paid for it.

With hourly, you get paid overtime.

I think that most nurses may not like overtime b/c you get burnt-out. Yes, the money is great but you cant work 7 days a week. You'll be digging your own grave that way. Also, depending on staffing conditions may be another reason that nurses dont work overtime - why go in extra if you know you are going to be short of help?

Personally, I love OT. If I could work 4-5 days a week, I would. However, it would be 2 days on, at least one day off, then another on, etc. I would never ever do 4-5 in a row. Its too much (speaking of 12 hour shifts here).

Yea thanks but if am offered a salary position, can i ask to be changed to hourly rate? would they change my pay status? or can i simply ask if i get paid overtime? Am willing to work overtime even if i have to work 5 days overtime.... thanks

I dont think any floor nurse staffing position will be offered as hourly.

If it is, dont take it.

Now if its an office nursing job, its probably a salaried nursing job which is normal. You should however, ask how much overtime is required and what their policy is regarding OT pay.

Sorry, I cant guess as to NY new grad pay, I really only know TX and PA.
