For those who work in the hospitals, in your or peers' experience, are there instances where hospitals (particular in medically underserved areas like L.A.) financially sponsor aspiring nurses to go to med school?

Honestly, I think you'll find many many hospitals across the US that will sponsor ANY employee's efforts to go to school to further their career in the medical field, whether they want to become a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, OR even an MD.
Perhaps even more so in an economically depressed area which is also short handed when it comes to health professionals! :)

My hospital reimburses $1000/year to pursue classes that are in the same field. I highly doubt you will find many hospitals that will reimburse someone to pursue medical school. Medical school is a VERY expensive journey (many students walk out of medical school with $200,000 - $300,000 in student loans). There are government and private programs that will pay for some of of a physicians student loans if they sign a contract.
