I'm interested in becoming an NP, either a WHNP/CNM or a PMHNP. Big difference right?! Well, I live in Pennsylvania and I can't seem to find any info on whether NP's can have a private practice here. Even with Google I can't fin the info. Would love if someone could help me out if they know.

Also would love to hear about your experience in private practice as WHNP or PMHNP. Thanks!

Didn't you call the PA board of nursing? They should tell you.

I haven't, but I will! Thanks.

The AANP is a great place to start:

"One-third of the nation has adopted full practice authority licensure and practice laws for nurse practitioners.

These states are: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming."

Many more states have bills in legislation right now.

Remember much of being an NP is knowing where to look for the answer!

Specializes in Pediatrics, High-Risk L&D, Antepartum, L.

PA requires physician collaboration. You can have your own practice but there must be a physician you collaborate with.

For example....I know a CNM who had her own private practice. She had her own office and everything. There is no doctor listed on the door...but she had a collaborative physician and they have a contact together.

Specializes in Anesthesia, Pain, Emergency Medicine.

PA has legislation moving forward. Keep your fingers crossed.
