NP and Credentialing

Published

Hey everyone,

I'm graduating NP school in a couple months and interviewing for jobs. I got fired from my very first job as a RN for actions related to drug use. I enrolled voluntarily in PNAP (my employer never reported me) and completed it without incident. I was never even charged with a single thing and have never had any other legal issues in my life. My RN license never had any action taken against it.

I am worried, though, that when I get hired for my first NP job, and they start the credentialing process, something will come up. Do they care about RN jobs when doing the credentialing for an NP job? I should also say I've had 3 subsequent RN positions without so much as a hiccup.

Any insight into this would be appreciated.

If it makes a difference I'm ACNP and an interviewing for hospital based positions.

First, great name, Regina!

Second, if it were a confidential (no public marks) program, then I would think you are fine.

Congratulations on your achievements!

Look at the credentialing questions carefully. Some ask if you've ever had formal discipline, some ask if you've ever been investigated. Sounds like you're in the clear either way since there's no paper trail at the BON which is where they'd enquire about such things. I'm not suggesting you lie, just saying I'd be careful about what you tell them. On some forms, it asks "in the past 3/5 years.." so if it's old enough I think on most credentialing you'd be fine.

I’m still In PNAP and graduated from NP school. I had no problems with credentialing except it took forever and a day. You should be fine!!!

the very best of luck to you

That's awesome. Ok. I just want to reach a point in my life where I don't feel like this haunts me.

Well if you are in the non disciplinary program it should completely go away when you are done. Now that doesn’t include the ptsd or the giant hole in your bank account

I was in the non disciplinary program. I guess my main concern is that I was fired from that job. So during the credentialing process, do they care about the RN positions? As in, contact them and ask the terms of separation?

I would think that depends on the employer. However, usually (at least in my experience) most employers when called upon to give a reference or an employment check will only divulge dates of employment for fear of getting sued for saying negative stuff

That's what I'm hoping. I also think the fact that it takes 2-3 months to complete credentialing is contributing to my nerves. Haha. What can they possibly be doing that takes so long. It makes me feel like they are leaving no stone unturned.
