Nosebleeds

Tell the child to stop picking their nose.

Hi All,

I am a pedi nurse, who is posting this rather simple question for a friend , who just took a job as a school nurse. She has spent some time subbing in another school system.

She wants to know how you handle nosebleeds. The school nurse orienting her had the child blow her nose! We never did it this way. Thought I'd ask the group. Also, if a child with the nose bleed consistently comes to the school nurse, what other measures would you take? I know schools are drying and I guess you can't put an humidfier by the child. Does the school allow water bottles? The school in my town does and drinking water would help in hydration. I noticed that it worked for my kids!

Work in an ENT unit and have 2 children who have frequent nose bleeds so have a little experience :chuckle

On our unit we place wrapped ice cubes on the bridge of the nose and just above eye brows, also found asking the pt to suck a popsickle or crsuhed ice works wonders. We never ask the pt to blow nose a definate no no, pt to lean back and relax not bed over or lean forward. If bleeding does not slow go onto ice pack around neck, very rarely gets to this stage.

Also keep the resting for at least half an hour, nose bleeds can be pretty frightening to anyone especially a child, were i work a lot of health professionals panic also and in turn panic the pt, as in all situation stay calm and realaxed.

Thank you all for your helpful advice. I hadnt thought of the most obvious--stop nose picking -LOL. I like t:chuckle he others and will pass them on to my friend.

I worked in an acute care setting--where most of the nosebleeds were occuring to the chemo kids and we had to do gelfoam--sometimes I forget the more obvious.

I always pinch the bridge of the nose right under the eyes- hard. I haven't had one that didn't dry up after a few minutes.
