Nicu Med Test

Heres my advice leave the test alone or eliminate it. I am a new graduate just been through five years busting my ass and every hospital wants to give you tests. In my opinion if you make it through these rigorous nursing programs, you have proven yourself worth. How about using the time for addition teaching or a refresher. When it comes down to such precise medication equations everyone should double check with a calculator.

I think this is a bad idea. Errors in the NICU can cause WAY more damage than in adults a LOT easier. Yes double check w/ calculator and usually another nurse...but that doesn't mean you are still getting the right answer w/ a calc.

Sometimes med tests and calculators don't cover what you need to know. Have you ever seen a wrong med ordered (and given for 3 days). No-one connected the dots. The dose was correct for the med that was supposed to have been ordered.

Drug calculations in a med test would be useful, but any new grad should already know how to do those. A class covering the meds that we usually use in the NICU might be useful, though.
