Nicotene test

Published

Hi,

Does anyone know if Aetna does a nicotene test for employment?

I don't know if Aetna specifically tests for nicotine metabolites, but I work for another major insurance company where all new hires undergo a urine screen to check for the presence of nicotine metabolites.

I would not be surprised if Aetna screens prospective new hires for the pressence of nicotine in their systems.

Thanks for the info. I have to do a drug screen but they did not and have not said anything about nicotene/cotinene and my current employer was forth coming with this info as well as other prospective companies I have looked at. I guess I figure if they tested for it I would be notified seeing as it is a legal substance. Or at least one would think.

Not necessarily. I recently took one for pre employment in a hospital and they didn't tell me. I just happened to notice something about it in the directions for the lab tech. However, i believe this hospital still hires those who test positive but encourages and possibly requires smoking cessation.

I have seen multiple positions posted that specifically say they are a non smoking facility and pre employment tests will be done... So yes it's possible they might not hire smokers if they are a private hospitals they certainly have that right.

as far as I have always heard, anything required for pre employment requirements should be provided by them as instructed to you by HR. I think it's absurd that you would have to pay out of pocket for a test they are requiring. Same thing goes for pals/acls. They can either say on the job recruitment info that applicants are responsible for providing this, or they pay for you to do it.
