I've been a RN for 5 years and am interested in NI. I have selected Grand Canyon University because it looks like a good program and cheaper than University of phoenix.
my question is after a masters program in NI should I be able to sit for a NI credential like BC(board certified) or CPHIMS? or per their eligibility criteria I should acquire time as a NI nurse before obtaining those credentials? do I have it right?
my thought process being that like the nclex once you get your BSN you take your boards and you get your RN. but it sounds like with NI you need some work experience as a NI before you can get those credentials?

If you want to be "nursing informatics" certified, then your certification would come from the ANCC. And yes, to sit for the exam, in addition to having an active RN license and other requirements, you need to also meet one of the following practice hour requirements:

I am starting in January, so when I finish my MSN with 200 hours, I can sit for boards almost immediately? I am ortho certified and there is only one option-2 years and 1000 hours.

And why would you want to sit for "boards"?
To be a certified NI nurse. Just like I wanted to be certified in orthopedics as an orthopedic nurse. I should have been clearer: I am starting my MSN in Informatics. Why wouldn't I want to be board certified?
