Ngt

the order is keep ngt open 2 hours after feeding.

what is your understanding?

Do I need to open it after 2 hours?

or

I maintain it open for 2 hours after feeding?

or

let us conclude the order is not quite clear?

I'm a new grad too so maybe it's just not clear to me either. To me it sounds like they want you to vent the ngt for 2 hours after feeding, and then close it after the 2 hours. I don't see why they would want you to keep it closed right after feeding and then open it after 2 hours. The order isn't clear though so I would ask.

Conclude the oder is NOT clear. Are these bolus feedings? If you leave the NGT open for 2 hours after feeding you'll need to be sure all the food doesn't come back out onto the pillow and leak everywhere. Open the NGT 2 hours later to vent gas??? Ok but weird. Does it mean to not place to suction or other fluids/feedings meds for 2 hours? Call the MD and ask for clarification or ask another staff member...

call the MD. Need to clarify

Definitely call the MD. I would be worried about the contents backing up through the tube, as Esme said. Usually they mean to do not resume suction for 2h post admin food/meds (had that a few times), but never heard of leaving it open per se.

Doesn't make sense?
