New - trying to learn the terms

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm new to the site and nursing. Please guide me to where I can learn the abbreviated terms like PEDS, LTC, etc.

Thanks :)

Hello and welcome to allnurses :)

If you list the abbreviations you need to know, someone is sure to explain what they mean. I don't know of a site that deals specifically with this but I'm sure we will be able to tell you what they mean.

For starters, PEDS is pediatrics (child nursing) and LTC is Long Term Care.

Peds-pediatrics

LTC-Long Term Care (Think nursing homes and assisted living)

ALF-Assisted Living Facility

ICU-Intensice Care Unit

CCU-Coronary Care Unit

NICU-Neaonatal Intensive Care Unit

PICU-Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

SICU-Surgical Intensive Care Unit

MICU-Medical Intensive Care Unit

Tele-Telemetry (meaning the patient is on a cardiac monitor of some sort)

PT/Pt/pt-patient

MAR-Medical Administration Record (where meds are listed for each patient and signed off when given)

There are so many abbreviations that I don't think it's even possible to list them all anywhere. Some you will learn from books or websites. Some you will learn during class and clinicals and some you will learn on the job.

Feel free to come here and ask. And welcome!
