new to all this

hi..i am new to this site..but i am a frequent user to britishexpats...anyway i am living in Saskatchewan..and would really like to continue the work i started in the hospital i worked in for 4 years..i worked in the maternity area as a maternity care assistant...which i loved i then decided i wanted to train as a midwife i went to college and got my a-levels and got offered a place at uni..but i fell pregnant and decided having a new born and 3 other kids was to much for studying to...anyway so here i am a year on in Canada i have sent my resume to the local hospital..to the boss of the nursing department who i have also spoken with..to see if its possible to do a job simular to my UK one she told me that midwifes had only just got into the hospitals here and she would speak to obs manager...after 3 months and still no answer from the boss of nursing and many emails to her..im still doing a job i hate..any advice i would greatly appreciate..oh we are currently waiting for our perminant residancy to go through shouldnt be long as we are at the end..thanks

Have you started some kind of registration process yet?

Not sure about your education, are you a trained nurse plus midwife or are you only trained in midwifery?

Might be an idea to contact SRNA there are in Regina and ask, since you will need to be registered or when you are a midwife only contact the Midwifes Association of Saskatchewan. I think the process for an internationally trained midewife is a lenghty one, with loads of tests.

About your hospital contact, I would try the obs manager directly.

thanks for your reply...im not trained as a midwife or nurse..but in the uk i am in a simular position as a health care assisant ..but in the maternity area only..thanks again

mmh depends very much on the unit, there are units that are using RN's only, so best will be really to contact unit manager, but without a registered profession your options are very limited. Have you considered distance learning? You could contact SIAST and see what they have to offer.

In a nutshell, your UK job doesn't exist here. L&D is an RN only job in most hospitals. LPNs are educated in L&D but usually are found in post partum care and well baby clinics.

You need to have your UK a-levels evaluated by a local college or university to see if you qualify for admission to a nursing programme.

Some postpartum units have service aides but they provide no hands on care.

Why not go to nursing school and become a nurse? It sounds like you have the brains, go for it!
