New Grad Program or Job

Hello Everyone,

I will be graduating with my BSN in May 2014(kind of far away I know) but I have a few questions. I am trying to start my search early and make sure that I am doing everything early enough so my job search could be a little easier. I was wondering if anyone had any advice of things I could or need to be doing now while I am still in school. Also, I have been reading alot about New Grad Programs, how are they different than regular new grad jobs and are the better than regular new grad jobs? I am just trying to make sure that my foundation is strong.

    I would suggest getting a job as a tech/ cna. I know a lot of jobs want you to have hospital experience outside of your clinical's for school.

    The difference that I know of for new grad jobs vs any other position as an rn is this generally means that they have a mandatory program for new graduate RNs that they hire which involves some kind of extra support. They have done studies that show new grads stay longer in hospitals that offer these programs.

    A new grad program would probably offer you more support and resources than you may get with just a regular new grad job. That being said, in this job market, new grads do not have the luxury of being choosy. Apply for both types and take whichever one you get offered.

    I agree with the PP: getting a job as an aide/tech/CNA is a good idea. It helps you gain experience, lets you network, and makes you an internal candidate for jobs (which while no guarantee of a RN job, can help your chances).
