New to the board

Hey. I am going to start nursing school in 2009. I can't tell you how happy I am. I'm finally pursuing my passion :redbeathe. So here is my dumb question for the boards...I have been told by my friends and family that I am too sensitive for ER work, but this is what *think* I want to do. Any advice? Next, how many times have you had to go to the morgue? The thought of a dead body popping up scares me senseless. I'm so proud to finally join the ranks here!!!!

in the hospital where i did most of my clinicals, the hospital had a "morgue staff" that transported the bodies for you. at the hospital i currently work at, the RNs have to transport the dead bodies. to make this even worse, our morgue is located in the corner of a very old basement, which is poorly lit and very few living people. it scares the crap out of me - but i take someone with me. as for being afraid of dead people, that's quite normal! i've only had to deal with a few. i avoid looking at their faces because that's the scariest part to me. just bag them and wheel them asap!

p.s. the lock on our morgue door is very old and locks from both sides. so unless you forget to unlock it permanently or prop the door open, you will get locked inside. i know of a couple of nurses that accidently locked themselves in the morgue and had to wait for someone to come down and unlock the door for them :o

anyway! on to more happy thoughts! puppies! sunflowers! sunshine! starting nursing school!

My advice is to wait until you're in NS clinicals to decide which aspects you like. I've seen many times that people often think they want to do a particular specialty, and then run screaming out the door on the last day of clinical, with their minds firmly changed, and thankful to their higher power that it's over.

Give it time, keep an open mind about all the specialties, and work to get a feel for each one as you experience it.
