I'm in a bind, I work in OB and I love it - Postpartum - mother/baby and well baby nursery. I love it, I mean there are days when I want to scream but I'm happy there. Problem is the staffing powers that be are crunching down hard core and we are being sent home or told not to come in all the time. We go in order so its not like its the same person every time but it is coming around fast and we are missing like a day a week or two days a pay period sometimes. Great if you have vacation time but hello I'm fairly new mine is all used up quickly from these send home days.
So I have a mortgage to pay and bills to pay and we are broke. What can I do? I can't go into med surg nursing, my back won't take it (i've had a few surgeries and have some current issues). I love what I do. So I was thinking I could maybe do some labor pool or prn work but the problem is I have less than a year expderience so I'm not sure if anyone would take me? What do you think?
I wish there was a way to prove to the powers that be that our staffing is NOT safe and its not fair and they will lose good nurses b/c they need to pay their bills and can't do that if they can't work. Our patients have not changed, meaning we have the same approx. number of deliveries, they have just initiated a new way of staffing things a new formula and it sucks. Sometimes we end up with 6 or so couplets which means 12 or so patients. and no aids so we do all the aid work plus nurse work.
It's just frustrating. I love my job but I need money too!

I would try and hang in there for a year, to have a good solid work foundation to present myself with. In the meantime, maybe there are agencies you can work for to do home visits or something? Some have RNs come to do initial assessments, do dressings and such.

you can APPLY for a local travel nursing position after 6-8 months. How comfortable you will feel depends on the experience you've gained through your current position and training. GOOD LUCK. A friend of mine did this "local" thing and was still able to get the housing allowance plus a good wage.
