need a little help

i need a little advice. i am starting a temp service, i am a LPN. i have been working in the doctors office for the past year. i start in three days in the hospital. i haven't been in the hospital for some time. are there any tips someone can give me? i won't be having "first day" training since i am the temp. i have brushed up on some old clinincal notes- but those only help so much. i would appreciate any advice thanks::D

If you are working nights, it helps the transition back into hospital work.

You've been in the doctors' office for the past year? How much hospital experience did you have BEFORE that?

I think therein lies the answer to how much of a problem going back to a hospital will be.

My suggestions: Inform the charge nurse before shift report. Tell her it is your first shift at this hospital....and your first shift in a year in hospital work.

She deserves to know.

She can help you a lot if you are up front with her. And it will impact your assignment.

Temps come with varying degrees of skills.

Ask LOTS of questions. It does not reflect on your nursing ability that you do not know.

It simply reflects that you are in a new envoironment.

You can't be expected to know where everything is, their routine,

or how all the gadgets and machines operate.

P.S. If you worked for a GOOD agency, they would have arranged an Orientation day at the hospital for you.

Hospitals appreciate a temp doing this.

By not orienting a shift,

It shows your agency does not care about the patients, you, or the hospital.

It shows they are too cheap to pay you for an orientation day.

Here is an idea. Since obviously neither the hospital nor the agency pay for orientation talk to your agency and possible a hospital or two where you may be working and ask if you might do an orientation without pay. Perhaps in the form of shadowing for a shift

Financially it may be a problem for you but it might in the long run be an advantage?

Look up your states board of nursing and familiarize yourself with your scope of practice.I don't think I would go into a hospital for an agency unless I had a good background in med-surg....
