Does anyone know what its called when a baby is born with an open stomach and what the name of the surgery is called?

I had a friend whose baby was born with this but i can't recall what it was called.

Thanks!

The only thing I can think of is gastroschisis but that is not a stomach problem, rather an intestine problem so it may not be what you're looking for.

Oops, double post.

Omphalocele? The surgery that they did on this one particular patient was "closure of omphalocele. This baby girl's abd was open from just below her sternum down to the symphysis pubis. She did great and is now a happy healthy 25 year old.

Depends on what kind of defect it was. If it was totally open-organs not protected by *anything* that would be a gastroschisis; if there was a membrane covering the protrusion it would likely be an omphalocele.

The baby's stomach was completely open and all of her organs were out. She is now 6 yrs old and very healthy, the only thing different about her is that she has a special belly button as she likes to tell people.
