I am completley new. I have always wanted to be an ob nurse, i have 3 daughters and i really have a lot of respect for the nurses that helped me deliver them. I love babies and pregnancy facinates me. But i really have no idea how to get started i dont know what classes to take or anything. Im going to get my CNA as soon as the new school year starts so i can start a nursing school but i dont know where to go from there. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

You just have to attend nursing school, I would suggest doing the RN program because a lot of places are steering away from LPN's in L and D. Then you need to find a hospital that will give a new grad a chance in l and d or what ever maternal/child health area you want to go it to. Lots of hospitals do this now, at least where I am! Good Luck!!

Check into all of the schools around you. Do research on their programs and find the one that best fits you. Then go to the admission department et let them know you are interested in nursing. They should be able to point you into the right direction. I agree with the above poster. Many hospitals only accept RN's for the L&D unit where I live, too.

Only RN's are hired in our area for maternal child.

I would not waste money on a cna course if I were you. Check out all local programs, meet with counselors to find out exactly what prerequisites you need to take before applying, what to take while you wait for admission, etc. Then pick a school and start on the course plan you've mapped out. I don't know if all states are the same, but in mine you can get a cna license after the first semester of nursing school.

I guess if you have lots of classes to take as prereqs, becoming a cna might get you useful healthcare experience, but otherwise I'd skip it. You could also get any kind of job in and OB office, just to get familiar.

Good luck. It took me 6 years of prereqs 1 at a time at night juggling with my job and home workload (kids), but I'm finally about to graduate. You can do it if you want. Get as much L&D type experience of any kind before graduating, as L&D new grad positions are competitive

Go straight for RN if L/D is what you want
