Generally, they aren't going to offer a specific unit; new hires usually are put where the need is the greatest or put in the float pool. If you truly want to work in a hospital, you'll have to accept what's offered and work hard to show your worth and be aggressive when openings show up.

For example, at my hospital, there are only 3 different "positions" for CNAs on 1st shift: Intermediate, Day, and Surgery. We are level IV critical access so we don't have ICU or surgery everyday, but we have a number of private pay patients who are nursing home qualified. One person is scheduled as the Day CNA and that person is responsible for getting all vital signs on any obs, acute, and/or skilled patients we many have and that person is also assigned those patients for cares the rest of the shift. The other 2 are assigned the intermediates. Once a week, we have a surgeon come in to do common, schedule surgical procedures and scopes. There is one RN and one CNA assigned to do pre- and post-procedure care that day. The " D " and the surgery positions are coveted positions; I worked hard to show my worth to get them over people with more experience and it paid off as I am usually always scheduled as the " D " and I am always scheduled for surgeries.
