I am currently a college student in a nursing program looking to transfer out. I am thinking about joining the Navy as enlisted and getting my nursing degree though them. I am just confused about the process of how I would do that. I am also wondering if it is better to get a degree in business first and then join the Navy as an officer. Im just at a very stressful part in my life and I am looking for advice on what to do.

I would suggest talking to a recruiter. I do not know of any enlisted program that offers nursing training. They have corpsman as enlisted Navy, but nurses are all officers. I am a Navy veteran and do not recall this being an option when I was in. Your best bet is talking to a recruiter though if you're interested in finding options for this.

There a couple options for you at this juncture. If you're already in a program, there is a scholarship opportunity for you. It is called the Nurse Candidate Program. You'd have to talk to the recruiter about the details, but basically if you're in a program the Navy will pay for the rest of your tuition and books. After you graduate, you'll obligate time as an officer.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and it was a good experience. Many of us go on to Nursing School or Medical School afterwards. There is a program called MECP (Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program) for nursing that can be applied to and completed while on active duty. It's an extremely competitive program and they choose maybe 16 to 20 applicants per year. You also have to sort through and deal with the politics of trying to create a competitive package. If you're wanting to become a nurse, then choosing to become an active duty Hospital Corpsman would be a slow process to reach that goal. You're much better off trying to finish school and coming in through a commission. That's just my opinion. If you're wanting to take a break from school and stay in the healthcare field, then becoming a Hospital Corpsman is a great choice.

I hope this helps!
